Laborer/Equipment Operator Position — Full Time — 40 hour per week (four 10-hour days May thru October, five 8-hour days November through April) This position requires extended hours during winter months and seasonal storms.
This position is responsible for assisting with the maintenance of the Town’s highways, lawn mowing, plowing snow and other general maintenance. The job requires heavy manual labor duties, which include lifting, shoveling, raking and operation of chainsaws and other equipment as assigned by the Public Works Director. Work is subject to review by the Public Works Director and the Selectmen.
Works as part of a team maintaining the Town of Buxton roads, which consist of operating/driving large Town trucks, road grader, backhoe and bulldozer;
Road maintenance consists of raking roadsides, patching potholes and tarred roads, shoveling, repairing ditches and culverts and other related activities as assigned;
Assists in seasonal repair and maintenance of Town Parks and properties as requested by the Public Works Director and/or Selectmen;
Removes trees and brush from Town roads using chainsaw and chipping equipment;
Picks up road side trash, straightens signs and posts and erects new signs and posts as requested;
Winterizes trucks, washes town equipment and mounts sanders;
Assist Town Garage mechanic as requested; and
Performs other duties as assigned by the Public Works Director.
High-School diploma or equivalent;
Must maintain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL); Class A or B
Ability to drive snowplow truck to plow snow and sand Town roads and municipal parking lots as required;
Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in the operation of automotive vehicles;
Knowledge of the geography of the Town, including the location of the streets and other hazards which may hinder safe snowplowing and road maintenance;
Experience and skills to operate heavy equipment: grader, backhoe and bulldozer;
Sufficient strength and agility to perform heavy manual labor duties such as lifting, shoveling dirt and snow, raking roadsides, installing culverts and operating a chainsaw for brush and tree removal from roadways and Town owned property for long periods of time in adverse climatic conditions;
Working knowledge of hazards and applicable safety precautions of work being performed; and
Must have and maintain a good driving record.
Experience and/or Related Skills Required
Experience operating large trucks for snowplowing and sanding Town roads;
Operation of heavy equipment such as back hoes, graders, wood chipper, and chainsaws;
Problem solving skills and ability to handle difficult situations, find satisfactory alternative solutions in an effort to maintain Town roads during storms and emergency situations;
Must be a team player able to maintain a good working relationship with co-workers, members of the community, and work effectively and efficiently with the Public Works Director and the public;
Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with co-workers and the public.
This position reports to the Buxton Public Works Director with oversight from the Buxton Board of Selectmen.
Starting Pay: $18.73 per hour
