Two Saco legislators have proposed an emergency measure in the Maine State Legislature demanding the federal government expend taxpayer money to help people who built their homes on sand.

In spite of the Saco Jetty in Camp Ellis being built in the late 1800s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide a smoother shipping channel in the Saco River, home and business owners continued to build on unstable land adjoining the jetty.

District 31 State Senator Justin Chenette and District 14 State Representative Donna Bailey, both Democrats of Saco, announced on Monday they were requesting from Congress a taxpayer bailout for the affected homeowners.
