The full plans for the Bar Mills and Canal Bridges are available as part of the MDOT bid package. We have reviewed the plans and have pulled out the key points about the new bridges.

  1. The project is scheduled to be completed by December 30, 2016.
  2. The old bridges are to be completely removed.
  3. The new bridges will not have the steel superstructure of the current bridges.
  4. The travel lanes of the new bridges will still be 11′ wide plus an additional 4′ shoulder next to each lane for an increase to 15′ in each direction.
  5. There will be a 5′ 1″ wide sidewalk on the upstream side of the bridges.
  6. There will be a sidewalk on the downstream side of Main Street from the bridge to Salmon Falls Road.
  7. The sidewalk on the upstream side of the bridge and the opposite side of Main Street will be connected with a pedestrian crosswalk with signs and button activated, yellow, flashing lights.
  8. The new bridges will be built slightly upstream of the current bridges and curved to place the approaches in nearly the same location as they are currently.
  9. The Depot Street and Main Street intersection will be changed by relocating the flag pole and monument, removing the island, and bringing the intersection closer to a right angle.
  10. There will be lighting spread throughout the upstream length of the two bridges and approaches.
