The Maine Department of Transportation will be advertising the replacement projects for the Bar Mills and Canal Bridges on December 17, 2014.
The Canal Bridge which carries Route 4A (Bar Mills Road) over the Saco River Canal has an estimated replacement cost of $2,140,000 to $2,550,000.
The Bar Mills Bridge which carries Route 4A (Bar Mills Road in Hollis/Main Street in Buxton) over the Saco River at the Hollis-Buxton town line has an estimated replacement cost of $6,050,000 to $6,820,000.
The two bridges work together to provide the Route 4A crossing from Hollis to Buxton in the Village of Bar Mills.
The total estimated cost of the project is $8,190,000 to $9,370,000.
Bar Mills was once a vibrant, active village, but since the mill on the Buxton side of the Saco River was shut down decades ago, the village has changed to a sleepy neighborhood with little need for an expensive bridge. Even the Bar Mills Fire Department relocated out of Bar Mills and is now located on Portland Road across from the Buxton Town Hall.
